Improving line management is a key part of Civil Service Modernisation and Reform and the Civil Service People Plan.

The best line managers lead and inspire professional, productive teams in which everyone thrives and excels.

The programme draws on best practice from academic research, professional bodies and cross-government colleagues. It will define line management for the Civil Service and set externally accredited Line Management Standards with clear targets and measures to ensure we have the best managers for today and are developing those for the future.

The new Line Management Standards will be hosted on Civil Service Learning, they will offer a framework for all existing and aspiring managers to build and develop their management skills.

The Standards set out clear expectations for line managers and their teams, providing the context to help create a consistent positive employee experience across the Civil Service. This, in turn, will drive individual, team and organisational performance, productivity and business outcomes.

Ensuring excellence in line management capability is the golden thread throughout the employee lifecycle (recruitment, performance management, promotion).

The Line Manager Induction Programme was launched last year in partnership with Government Campus. The Induction Programme sets out the expectations for Civil Service line managers and offers a refresher course on the latest management best practice.
