Starting on
the Fast Stream

Build your legacy. Implement your vision.

If I am successful, when will I start?

If you are successful, your start date will depend on the specific Fast Stream scheme you’ve applied to. All schemes begin in September or October the year after you apply, on either 1 September or 29 September 2025.

Can I choose which department I work in?

You cannot choose your department. Assignment depends on existing vacancies and where scheme managers believe you will best fit.

The Fast Stream is designed to develop leaders for the whole Civil Service. You might be surprised by the variety of departments that can cater to your interests and provide excellent opportunities for your development.

Can I choose my work location?

You can’t choose where you work but your location preferences will be considered. Fast streamers need to be mobile and flexible. Relocation at least once during the programme is common.

Requests based on personal circumstances, like caring responsibilities, will be considered but cannot be guaranteed.

What is the Pre-Employment Check process?

If you’re successful, you’ll receive a link to the Pre-Employment Check guidance in your job offer email. Read it carefully to understand the steps required for your role.

If you’re already a civil servant, contact us immediately with your current department details. We need this information to ensure the correct checks are completed for you.

Successful candidates who are serving civil servants and have maintained continuity of service will have their basic pay from their former Civil Service post taken into account during the calculation of their starting salary. You should retain your current basic pay if you are entering the Cabinet Office on a level transfer.

For any queries regarding the pre-employment process, please submit a request for help.
