Who we are
The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) is a department dedicated to changing and improving lives in the UK.
We support local governments and empower communities, by delivering safe, secure homes that people need.
To make sure we deliver, we sponsor 18 agencies and public bodies, including Homes England, the Planning Inspectorate and HM Land Registry, which are critical to our mission. Find out more about who we are below.

People are at the heart of everything we do and naturally we take pride in our own open and collaborative culture. We have excellent staff networks to represent and advocate for our colleagues, who play a vital role in the department’s decision-making.

- We will build 1.5 million high quality homes by pursuing ambitious reforms to the planning system and wider market, ramping up the supply of social and affordable housing and removing other key barriers to growth. We will end the building safety crisis, reform the leasehold and private rented sectors and drive up standards across out social housing stock to ensure that homes are not an undue cause of stress, fear or poor health for people who live in them. We will give councils the tools they need to house the most vulnerable citizens so that nobody is left without a secure roof over their head.
- We are working to create places with modernised local government, sustainable public services and high-quality infrastructure. We will reform the local government system to drive up standards and put councils on a sustainable financial footing by ensuring services are delivered at the right level, funding is flexible and in line with need, and councils are properly accountable to their residents.
- We will give all councils the tools to maintain efficient and sustainable public services, designed with the people who use them in mind. We will prioritise services supporting the most vulnerable citizens, including those who are homeless or in need of social care. We will ensure that new developments, including the next generation of new towns and urban extension, have the infrastructure such as schools, hospitals, parks and GP surgeries that working people and families rely on.
- We are working to shape an economy that delivers tangible growth everywhere and for everyone. We will focus the resource on all arms of government on creating and spreading the tangible benefits of growth, prioritising higher living standards that communities in every corner of the country can genuinely feel. We will roll out devolution across England to put decision making in the hands of those who know their area best, ensuring our mayors and strategic authorities have the powers they need to deliver homes, skills, jobs and opportunities in their areas.
- We will create strong communities where people live well together, cooperate and actively participate in our democratic and civic processes by supporting integration, celebrating the values and cultural heritage that binds us together, and investing properly in our local areas.
Homes. Places. Growth.
