Experiences of working in government
Science and engineering roles in government
Hear more from our scientists and engineers, and their reflections moving into the civil service from academia and industry.
From materials science to UK policy impact
“After a career spanning academia and the private sector including senior roles at the Cambridge Graphene Centre and a leading UK manufacturer, Dr. Thanuja Galhena opens up about her jump from academic and industry roles into public service.
Fellowships in government
Hear about the experiences of UKRI policy fellows, academics who have taken the opportunity to join government departments for 18 months.
Fellowships in government
Professor Rowena Hill, UKRI Policy Fellow, Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG)
Rowena’s confidence in working with government has grown significantly, and she now feels equipped to identify where her expertise can make a difference and collaborate effectively with decision makers.”
Fellowships in government
Professor Ana Manzano, UKRI Policy Fellow, Department for the Economy in Northern Ireland
During her fellowship Ana found there was a strong appetite for partnership, that academic input was highly valued, and she felt respected and trusted from day one.
Experiences of providing expert advice
These case studies showcase examples of how you can work with government through advisory roles, policy engagement, or responding to an area of research interest.
Professor Caroline Bond
Caroline responded to an Area of Research interest and found it led to “a great chance to share evidence and start a conversation about what works in practice.” Caroline encourages colleagues to embrace engagement opportunities and not underestimate the value of their expertise. “Even a short session can spark ideas and influence thinking.”
Professor Sue Lanham-New
Sue’s work on the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition has helped shape national guidance and put vitamin D in the spotlight. She strongly encourages others to join a science advisory body to make a difference, for her “It’s been a huge privilege to be able to use my knowledge and expertise to influence policy.”
Dr Fahad Ahmed
As an early career researcher, Fahad applies his expertise on foodborne and zoonotic health risks to a Food Standards Agency advisory committee – reviewing evidence, shaping risk assessments, and connecting with experts across government and research institutions. His advice for other researchers is that: “publishing papers is not enough, learn how evidence is used in policy.”
