What impact does Government Property have?

Find out about the social impact our work has on the public, ministers and wider public estate.

Working in the Government Property Function

The scale, complexity and impact of the work we do is unrivalled. More than 7,000 people work in government property, across the UK and overseas. You could be working as a surveyor, a facilities manager, an architect, a sustainability aspect, or leading a major construction project,  to name a few.

Whatever you do, and wherever you work, a job in the Civil Service is an opportunity to make a difference.

Make people’s lives better

Property is the foundation upon which every public service is built. Better workplaces, better buildings, which are better designed, help enable better public services. Your job, working with us, is to help design, configure, and manage the biggest and most diverse property portfolio in the country - making sure it is best placed to support vital, often life saving, public services.

In the property industry, there is no bigger responsibility.

High-profile and important work

Property is central to the biggest priorities on the Government agenda. You’ll play a big role in levelling up the UK, by relocating and redesigning the government estate to create jobs, opportunities and prosperity throughout the UK.

You’ll also be at the centre of the drive to create net zero emissions public services, following the principles within the Property Sustainability Strategy by constantly improving and retrofitting public buildings to make them more environmentally-friendly and able to deliver on the targets within the Greening Government Commitments.

Help people and places

Working in the government property profession is a unique opportunity. We are different to the private sector, and different to anything in the property industry. Our motivations are not driven by profitability, they’re about making places better, and improving people’s lives.

It’s a career like no other in our industry.
