A team of enthusiastic Green Champions from our Liverpool Regional Centre recently joined forces with the Canal and River Trust for a day of meaningful action.
This marked the first day of HMRC Liverpool’s newly established partnership with the charity, with a shared goal of keeping the local canals clean and accessible for all.
The team, comprising of nine colleagues from different teams from across the business, made use of one of their volunteer days to tackle a stretch of the canal from Bootle New Strand to Rimrose Valley in Litherland.
After a quick safety briefing in the morning, they got to work, cutting back overgrowth, raking debris, and tidying the paths to make them more accessible for walkers, cyclists, and nature lovers. Though the rain arrived later in the day, they didn’t let it dampen their enthusiasm.
By the time they wrapped up at 3:30pm, they had collectively contributed over 64 hours of hard work, making a visible difference to the canal area. The representatives from the Canal and River Trust who worked alongside the group of volunteers were delighted with the progress, and their appreciation further fuelled their desire to do more.
It wasn’t just about cleaning up the canal; the day also fostered a strong sense of belonging among the volunteers. Colleagues from different teams bonded, many of them meeting for the first time, and they all enjoyed the opportunity to connect and reflect on the impact of their efforts.
“Wow, what a memorable start to our new partnership with the Canal and River Trust! Despite an initial gloomy weather forecast, the skies soon cleared, and spirits were high amongst the volunteers as we set about the maintenance of a quarter mile of canal. The jobs were varied meaning that the group could switch activities throughout the day and the conversations flowed. We can’t wait for the next session, particularly as we’ve been promised a boat!”
