  • 00:02 [A young female HMRC employee talks to the camera] [Siobhan, Recruitment Contracts Manager, HMRC] I'm definitely not the tax man you were expecting.
  • 00:15 [Joseph] Choosing an apprenticeship scheme and joining HMRC straight out of sixth form was one of the best decisions I ever made.

  • 00:26 [Alison, Portfolio Director, HMRC] My journey at HMRC spans 32 years and it's something I'm really proud of. Having climbed the career ladder from my most junior grade within the organisation to where I am now as a Senior Civil Servant, who would have believed it!
  • 00:39 [Jason, Frontline Manager, HMRC] I lead an incredible team of caseworkers, and while I have the privilege of guiding this team, they are in fact the real heroes. Together we've recovered over £11.5 million in lost revenue, bringing much needed funds back into the UK economy.
  • 00:56 [Siobhan] I've found a passion for data analysis, research and problem solving, and was given the freedom to explore how this could be better utilised within the team. This has led me to explore how generative AI could be used within Talent Acquisition and I've been able to champion this on behalf of my team and really support them and develop them along the way.

  • 01:25 [Rose] Whilst in the role I joined the Spring Development programme, but little did I know, the programme became a journey of self-discovery. Plus, I was fortunate enough to gain a promotion off the back of it too, which was a real proud moment for me.
  • 01:39 [Alison] Thanks to HMRC, I've been able to drive my own career path through initiatives like the Professional Management Careers Programme which allowed me to quickly progress through various roles and gain extensive experience in operations and project delivery.
  • 01:51 [Joseph] I was named HMRC Apprentice Ambassador of the Year and clinched The Apprentice of the Year award at the Multicultural Apprenticeship Awards 2023 and I can't wait to see what other diverse opportunities the future holds for me within HMRC.
  • 02:04 [Siobhan] It's crazy to think that before joining HMRC I never had any previous experience in this kind of role, but that's what I love about working here.
  • 02:14 [Mohammed] So, for me, HMRC is not just a workplace. It's an inclusive space that truly understands and supports my personal needs. A workplace that I genuinely enjoy being a part of.
  • 02:26 [Joseph] I came straight from school with no experience.
  • 02:28 [Rose] I have a career I never would have expected.
  • 02:31 [Mohammed] I have the confidence to realise what I'm capable of.
  • 02:33 [Alison] 32 years ago, I was just a junior.

  • 00:07 [Joseph, Senior Strategy Advisor] I'm Joseph, the Senior Strategy Advisor based in our Stratford Regional Centre. I joined HMRC straight out of sixth form in 2019 at the age of 18, a couple of days before my 19th birthday. Starting as a policy apprentice, I delved into VAT policy, and I was both surprised and proud to gain a promotion after just one year in the role. I was given the opportunity to lead on some interesting and high-profile pieces of work, mainly around the Brexit transitional period, and I also contributed to the Chancellor's policy request on energy saving materials, something I never thought I would get the opportunity to do as an apprentice. After completing my apprenticeship scheme in 2022, I was lucky enough to secure another promotion, shaping our organisations strategy as a Senior Strategy Advisor. Outside of my day-to-day role is where my passion really lies. I spearhead initiatives like supporting the Young Asian Woman and Young Black Man Projects, which help tackle unemployment in the areas and also encourage people like me to join HMRC. All this hard work has led to incredible recognition, in which I was named HMRC Apprentice Ambassador of the Year and clinched The Apprentice of the Year award at the Multicultural Apprenticeship Awards 2023. Choosing an apprenticeship scheme and joining HMRC straight out of sixth form was one of the best decisions I ever made, and I can't wait to see what other diverse opportunities the future holds for me within HMRC.

Thanks to HMRC, I've been able to drive my own career path, through initiatives like the Professional Management Careers Programme, which allowed me to quickly progress through various roles and gain extensive experience in operations and project delivery. I've also had the opportunity to develop my professional skills in other areas over the years. I'm a chartered project professional, an alumni of the Major Projects Leadership Academy, and accredited to review major programmes and projects across government. In my current role as a Portfolio Director, I oversee an exciting portfolio of change that benefits the whole department, something I never envisaged myself doing when I joined 32 years ago. My career journey has been both challenging and rewarding, especially while caring for my child who has severe disabilities, but I wouldn't change it for the world. For me, working for HMRC is not just a job, it's a place where you can build a career, make a real difference while still supporting the needs of your family.
