About HM Land Registry

Our purpose

We protect land ownership and provide services and data that underpin an efficient and informed property market.

For 160 years HM Land Registry has served as the critical institution protecting the right to property and enabling the market to operate. By keeping the definitive and guaranteed record of property ownership for around 88% of the land area of England and Wales, we allow property to be transacted securely and with confidence.

Millions of people and businesses rely on HM Land Registry every year for guaranteed information on property ownership and other elements affecting land use, such as planning conditions and listed building status.

Our people

HM Land Registry employs over 6,000 people across England and Wales who support our vision of a world leading property market as part of a thriving economy and a sustainable future. Roles within HM Land Registry are incredibly varied, and you could find an opportunity for you in frontline operations, customer support, legal advisories, finance, human resources, digital and technology, register integrity, and project management – to name but a few! So, whatever your skills, background, and experience is, we have a role for you with us.

Our culture

Our people are at the heart of our plans to transform HM Land Registry. Our cultural aspirations are grounded in our People Strategy and have been developed through workshops and focus groups with our staff. The culture we aspire to:
• promotes a strong connection to our organisation and its values;
• is inclusive and builds trust with one another; and
• empowers our people to take responsibility and to innovate.

We created four value statements that describe what we expect our culture to look like. They are:
• We give assurance.
• We have integrity.
• We are professional.
• We drive innovation.

Our colleagues define our culture every day through their actions and behaviours – so if these statements describe you and your drivers, look for our current vacancies on Civil Service Jobs.

Our strategy

Read our Strategy 2022+ to see how you could help us to achieve our vision of being the world’s leading land registry for speed, simplicity, and an open approach to data.

“The value of land in England and Wales is estimated at over £8 trillion which is more than half the wealth of the nation. With over £260 billion worth of property transacted each year, the UK property market is one of the largest in the world.”

Our locations

We have over 6,000 people working for us, across 14 offices throughout England and Wales. Thanks to our hybrid working approach many of our roles have flexible location requirements which means you can base yourself at any one of several offices.

Our offices are in Birkenhead, Coventry, Croydon, Durham, Fylde, Gloucester, Hull, Leicester, Nottingham, Peterborough, Plymouth, Swansea, Telford and Weymouth.

All our roles on Civil Service Jobs will have more information about where that role can be based but if you have any questions, please ask the contact named in the advert.

More than you think

In addition to residential and commercial property, HM Land Registry also maintains a whole host of other types of land property on our register. We hold detailed information regarding the ownership of mines and minerals situated hundreds of feet below ground, as well as significant airspace thousands of feet above it. We have also registered trees, headstones, ancient ruins and much, much more!
