User researcher

About the user researcher role

As a user researcher at DVSA, you help shape digital services that millions of drivers, learners and businesses rely on every day. You put people at the heart of every design decision, ensuring services are accessible and inclusive for everyone who uses them.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Planning and leading end-to-end user research activities, from identifying your user groups to choosing the right research approach
  • Building relationships with users, whether members of the public or trade bodies, to gather meaningful insights
  • Collecting qualitative and quantitative data, analysing it to draw out key insights, and synthesising your findings into recommendations that support decision making
  • Presenting your conclusions and recommendations to stakeholders at all levels

Programme delivery manager

About the programme delivery manager role

As a Programme Delivery Manager at DVSA, you are a strategic leader and delivery expert, translating complex digital, data and technology ambitions into outcomes that improve road safety and public services. You act as the critical link between operational teams and senior leadership, creating the conditions for exceptional delivery while protecting your teamโ€™s focus and wellbeing.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Leading and coordinating the delivery of complex, multi-workstream programmes that support DVSAโ€™s strategic objectives
  • Managing stakeholder relationships and facilitating clear communication across departments to keep delivery on track
  • Overseeing resource planning, risk mitigation and performance reporting to ensure programmes stay within scope and budget
  • Driving a culture of continuous improvement through agile leadership and cross-departmental collaboration
  • Managing supplier relationships and performance, including contract oversight, delivery against KPIs, procurement activity to ensure value for money and continuity of service

Data architect

About the data architect role

As a Data Architect at DVSA, you’ll help shape how the agency designs, manages and uses its data. DVSA cannot function without data, and your work builds the technical foundations that keep it properly collected, governed and available to the services that depend on it.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Defining the data architecture framework, models, standards and principles used across DVSA
  • Developing and maintaining a data catalogue to document how data flows across the organisation
  • Translating business requirements into clear data requirements and supporting the development of DVSA’s data strategy
  • Collaborating across teams to support data governance and ensure clear ownership of data assets

Platform/Dev Ops engineer

About the platform/DevOps engineer roles

As a Platform/DevOps Engineer at DVSA, you’ll support the development and operation of software through the tools, environments and practices that power our digital services. You’ll be responsible for effective development processes across the board, from managing testing environments to maintaining the technical foundations that underpin our public facing services.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Designing and implementing technical solutions to automate, deploy and operate cloud infrastructure
  • Building and maintaining infrastructure that is scalable, secure and cost-effective
  • Using industry best practice to inform technical tool selection based on user and business requirements
  • Working as part of a Scrum team to take solutions from initial concept through to live delivery

Software developer

As a Software Developer at DVSA, you’ll work across a wide range of digital services and platforms used by millions of people every year. At all levels, you’ll write, update and maintain code that shapes the services drivers, learners and businesses rely on.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Creating, updating and maintaining code across DVSA’s digital services, products and platforms
  • Playing a key role in the design, build, support and improvement of public-facing services
  • Working in agile teams alongside architects, designers, user researchers and test engineers
  • Contributing to decisions about the tools and technologies used across the profession

Test engineer

About the test engineer role

As a Test Engineer at DVSA, you’ll design, build and execute tests that keep our large-scale digital services running reliably for millions of people. You’ll apply diverse testing techniques to identify risks, improve quality and promote good engineering practices across development teams.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Developing and executing test plans across a range of DVSA digital projects and products
  • Performing both manual and automated testing, including exploratory testing that draws on your curiosity and business knowledge
  • Identifying and capturing test cases and setting up test environments alongside development teams
  • Helping ensure our services are robust, reliable and ready for the public

The road ahead for DVSA Digital and Data

Innovation Lab

Weโ€™ve launched our first Innovation Lab, a dedicated team within DVSA Digital and Data which aims to explore emerging technologies, help solve challenges faced in our services and drive continuous improvement.

Security

The Protective Monitoring team use market-leading products and training to protect the data held on our systems from increasingly sophisticated attacks.

Serverless solutions

After significant investment to move all our services to the cloud, we are now optimising the use of new technology using serverless solutions that enable us to deliver faster and smarter.

Future of the theory test

DVSA is now bringing many of the back-office functions in-house. Building and running the digital platform which integrates and underpins the service.

Artificial intelligence (AI)

After winning an award for our AI systems, we are continuing to develop and invest in AI capability in all our digital services. Weโ€™ve developed an AI Community of Practice, which aims to make AI accessible, open and ethical to its members across the agency.
