Verification Assurance
Officer

As a Verification Assurance Officer, youโ€™ll be part of the first line of defence against fraud. Youโ€™ll identify risks at the earliest opportunity, strengthen the verification of Universal Credit claims and help prevent fraud and incorrect payments from entering the welfare system.

Itโ€™s a varied and important frontline role where youโ€™ll work directly with customers and colleagues, using evidence, professional judgement and strong communication skills to make a real difference.

The role of a Verification Assurance Officer

As a VAO, youโ€™ll play an important role in ensuring benefit claims are supported by the right evidence and that potential risks are identified and addressed at the earliest opportunity.

Working closely with Jobcentre and Service Centre colleagues, youโ€™ll carry out robust, evidence-based verification activity across specific elements of Universal Credit. This can include engaging directly with customers, reviewing evidence and exploring discrepancies or concerns to establish the facts.

By identifying issues early, youโ€™ll help prevent incorrect payments, minimise potential customer debt and safeguard public money.

As a Verification Assurance Officer, you will carry out customer-facing verification activity, including interviews, and review and assess evidence provided in support of Universal Credit claims. You will use your judgement to identify potential fraud risks, discrepancies and vulnerabilities, ensuring verification activity is robust, evidence-based and consistent. You will also help customers understand their responsibilities and the evidence required to support their claim, providing a professional and fair customer experience throughout.

Collaboration will be an important part of the role. You will work closely with colleagues across Jobcentres, Service Centres and CFCD, sharing your knowledge and helping to increase awareness of fraud risks. You will identify and share emerging fraud trends and intelligence, provide practical advice and guidance to strengthen fraud prevention, and contribute insight and management information to support continuous improvement and help protect public funds.

As a Verification Assurance Officer, you’ll work with a wide range of people and circumstances. The role involves reviewing evidence, speaking with customers, and using professional judgement to establish the facts of a case.

What I enjoy most is the variety. No two cases are exactly the same, and the role gives you the opportunity to develop analytical, communication and decision-making skills while making a real contribution to ensuring benefit claims are supported by the right evidence.

The team is supportive and there is always help available when dealing with new or complex situations. You don’t need a background in fraud or benefits to succeed. If you’re willing to learn, enjoy problem-solving and have an eye for detail, this could be the role for you.

Your Learning Journey

As a new Verification Assurance Officer, youโ€™ll follow a structured learning journey designed to give you the knowledge, practical skills and confidence you need to succeed in the role. Your initial learning will introduce you to the VAO role and the wider fraud prevention environment, alongside essential mandatory learning. Youโ€™ll then develop your knowledge and skills across key areas including verification activity and fraud awareness, customer engagement, evidence gathering and assessment, interview techniques, and the verification of identity, housing, children and childcare. Our flexible, modular approach allows learning to respond to business priorities while also supporting your individual development.

Following your initial training, youโ€™ll move into a supported consolidation period where you can put your learning into practice in a live operational environment. Youโ€™ll work alongside experienced VAOs, with opportunities to shadow colleagues, undertake supported verification activity, observe and conduct customer interviews, review and assess evidence, and develop your ability to recognise potential fraud risks. Throughout this period, mentoring, coaching and regular feedback will help you build confidence, strengthen your professional judgement and continue developing your skills.

Your development will continue as you become established in the role, with regular reviews, competency assessments and support from your line manager helping you understand your progress and identify further development opportunities. As your confidence and experience grow, youโ€™ll have opportunities to broaden your knowledge and develop expertise across different areas of verification activity. Our aim is to support you to become a skilled, confident and adaptable VAO, equipped to respond to emerging risks, strengthen fraud prevention, protect public funds and provide a fair and professional service to our customers.

“It’s a role that offers a genuine opportunity to make a difference. Verification Assurance Officers play a key part in maintaining quality standards, providing constructive feedback, and helping to improve outcomes across the business. No two days are exactly the same, and the role provides exposure to a wide range of work and colleagues.

One of the things I value most about CFCD is the willingness of people to share knowledge and support each other’s development. New ideas are welcomed, and your experience, whether gained within DWP or elsewhere, can bring valuable insight to the team.”
