Communications

Our Work

With over 50 million motorists in the UK, and over 6000 staff employed at DVLA, the communications we share can have a significant impact on how people go about their daily lives.

Whether itโ€™s a behavioural change campaign to encourage a public shift to online services, promoting a new service for motorists, or communicating a new staff initiative, our communications teams help to deliver important information to help inform stakeholders and promote the work of DVLA.

Our communications department is divided into four subdivisions:

  • External Communications
  • Strategic Communications
  • Internal Communications
  • Creative Services

External Communications

We communicate to a range of external stakeholders through evidence-based communications that reach the right people at the right time with the right message..

The team is split into three specialities: Media Relations, Campaigns and Content.

Media relations

Our media relations team create and deliver robust reactive responses to regional and national press to support DVLAโ€™s strategic goals. They also work on proactive media handling and deal with journalists on a daily basis, including issuing timely rebuttals and good news stories.

Campaigns

Our marketing team plan, manage and deliver insight-driven behaviour change and awareness raising campaigns throughout the UK. We pride ourselves on first-class, creative communications that tell compelling stories about DVLA that resonate with our audience. The team also provide expert marketing and branding advice.

Content

Millions of motorists use GOV.UK for DVLA services and itโ€™s the role of the content team to ensure the messages on it are clear and informative. The team work closely with the Government Digital Service (GDS) and produce consistently high-quality content across a variety of channels for all DVLAโ€™s external messages. This includes email alerts, DVLA forms, and the management of our social media channels.

Strategic Communications

Our Strategic Communications team is responsible for developing and delivering communications plans that are aligned to the agencyโ€™s strategic priorities and change programmes.

The team has a pivotal role that sits at the centre of the wider DVLA Communications team, working alongside our internal, external and creative colleagues, to deliver campaigns through innovative ways of reaching our target audiences. We consider internal, external and stakeholder audiences, through our own and earned channels and identify opportunities to share messages across DfT and wider government.

They work closely with different areas of the agency, building relationships to understand individual business objectives as well as strategic priorities, offering advice on how we can support with communications.

Internal Communications

Our Internal Communications team is responsible for the delivery of all corporate internal communications to over 6000 staff, across multiple sites covering Swansea and Birmingham.

The team builds trust and commitment to change with staff through clear and effective communications, engaging with them in a way which motivates them to maximise their performance and deliver DVLAโ€™s business strategy.

They develop, deliver, and evaluate evidence-based internal campaigns which are aligned to strategic priorities. Their insight helps them provide best-practice advice and guidance to agency colleagues on communications approach, working closely with colleagues at DfT and the Cabinet Office.

The team also lead on and deliver a series of campaigns and initiatives aligned to our strategic priority titled โ€˜A great place to workโ€™, which showcases the agency as an inclusive employer, offering good quality, rewarding jobs for the talented people who work in DVLA. Our internal communications encourage staff appreciation and engagement through internal campaigns, staff events, and coordinate our corporate Charity of Choice activities.
