Life at Ofqual

Working in the finance and commercial team at Ofqual

Why I chose Ofqual

Friends told me about the supportive working culture here. They were right – it’s a place where people are really helpful.

What I do

I manage contracts and work with suppliers. My role includes handling purchase orders, running tender processes and evaluating bids. It’s not something everyone gets to do so I find it quite exciting.

How I’m developing my skills

I’m studying for my CIPS qualification – a 12-month course in procurement and supply chain management. The course teaches me essential skills in commercial contracting, negotiation techniques and managing supplier relationships.

Even after finishing just one module, I can see improvements in my work. I now have a better understanding of contract requirements and tender processes. This has helped me evaluate bids more effectively and work more efficiently.

What advice would you give someone looking to apply for a role at Ofqual?

Success in procurement requires three key skills: excellent organisation skills, negotiation skills, and strong attention to detail.

Don’t worry if you’re new to procurement. While experience in supplier management, contracts and negotiation is beneficial, it’s not essential. We’ll train you and help you develop these skills.

What matters most is that you’re passionate about solving problems, enjoy working collaboratively, like to continually improve and have an interest in public service.

If this sounds like you, keep an eye out for roles on Ofqual’s LinkedIn
