- [Derek Thomas – Chief Operating Officer – Valuation Office Agency and South West Head of Place] Okay so I've been in the Civil Service for 31 years and even now I'm still learning how broad the Civil Service is, but I think what's really great about the Civil Service is the variety of roles, the variety of departments, but actually no matter where you work you're there to make a difference to society and support obviously the government aim whatever it might well be, to deliver great services for the whole of the country.
- [Roy Albert – Lead Surveyor – Regional Valuation Unit – Valuation Office Agency] I would say in terms of the Civil Service based on where I come from my background risen up in a small island I'm moving to England I always said a Civil Service always give you the opportunities and the reason for the opportunities is because they want civil service to be as diverse as possible.
- [Steph Jary – Deputy Director – Portfolio Strategy and Foresight – HMRC] Diversity, inclusion it's really important to me personally. Um I came from lower socioeconomic background, which is the posh way of saying I was brought upon benefits on a council estate, but simply I'm also a lesbian and the Civil Service has been a really safe home for me. It's something that encourages inclusion, encourages your difference so even at a time where legislation was perhaps not as friendly to people from minorities like myself the Civil Service always was and it's only gotten better.
- [Derek] I think places for growth what it recognizes is that there is talent there's potential there's expertise there's knowledge everywhere in the UK and I think this sort of agenda for me recognises that but it also allows us to think about how do we harness that talent without that stipulation of having to be in London or any other of the big cities.
- [Roy] Everyone is always willing to help and I think looking at my path in terms of being a chartered surveyor a lot of that came from colleagues chipping in and helping me out.
- [Mike Greatwich – Defence Equipment & Support Director – Ministry of Defence] Try walking underneath the hull of a big ship in a dry dock try taking off from an aircraft carrier in a helicopter underneath the hull of a big ship in a dry dock try taking off from an aircraft carrier in a helicopter try standing on the deck of a ship and a force 10 in the North Sea, I've done all of those things. I can't think of any career that you would have such a breadth of opportunity in terms of function, role, physical location, geographical location, there is no equivalent in the private sector, nothing comes even close.
