- [Rachel Foster – Deputy Director, Transformation and COVID Communications – HM Revenue and Customs] So for me it’s about being able to stay in your region, work in your region and contribute to it as well. We have some incredible skills and expertise in the North East and why wouldn’t we want to harness that. First of all, in terms of recruiting people into the Civil Service in this region but also making sure we understand what people need in our communities. I think if we have that we can do some really great things.
- [Phil North – Head of site, Department for Education] Having local people influencing national decisions or influencing local decisions is really, really important. You know, people should have skin in the game and it’s really important that everyone gets the opportunity to work in the Civil Service, to have that, to make that contribution.
- [Chris Richardson – Deputy Director, service delivery, Government Recruitment Service] What I see in Places for Growth and the levelling up strategy is that people like me will no longer have to feel they need to move from their home to be able to progress their career, and the opportunity is there for talent, wherever it’s from.
- [Beth Russell – Director General, Tax and Welfare – HM Treasury] So I’m going to be moving shortly to the new Government Economic Campus in Darlington. I’m doing that because I feel really passionately that this is a great thing for the Civil Service to be doing. I’m really looking forward, personally, to my move, moving out of London, living in a different area of the country and getting to know the local community.
- [Sheila Beniams – Private Secretary – Government Business Services] It broadens everyone’s horizons. If you live in Liverpool or Newcastle or wherever you live outside of London, there are opportunities coming your way and it’s been really interesting to see how the departments have risen to this challenge.
- [Chris] The senior Civil Service and the Civil Service at large is no longer that popular perception of you have to go to the right school or the right university to get on. Talent is what matters in the Civil Service.
- [Pete Walsh – Deputy Director – HM Revenue and Customers transformation] If I’m honest, I would not want to work for anybody else. [laughs]
