  • 00:07 [Voice over from Samuel Barber, deputy regional business manager, Office for Standards in Education] I always describe the Civil Service as a community rather than a workplace.
  • 00:12 [Erin McNeil, category manager, Crown Commercial Service] It's a really great place to work. There's so many opportunities and there's something for everybody because there's so many different departments, so many different teams and functions so there'd always be something that'll interest everyone.
  • 00:23 [Radhika Seth, business support officer, Office for Standards in Education] I think it's a gratifying and rewarding job. This is a job which gives you an opportunity to work at the heart of government decision making and at the end of the day, anything you do you are going to make a difference in people's lives no matter how big or small.
  • 00:38 [Samuel] The world of the Civil Service feels like it's getting a lot bigger. Where it felt like you might be working in a small team with five or six people in the office, actually you're working with people from all over the country.
  • 00:49 [Brian Harley, international engagement and partnerships lead, Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science] We have people around the coast, we have people overseas collecting data that's, you know, trying to help and inform policy, evidence and on a global scale as well you know. We work with organisations all around the world from the Pacific to Caribbean to the Middle East to Asia.
  • 01:05 [Erin] There's a big focus on diversity and inclusion and there we have networks for individual areas, there's the BAME network, the LGBT network. There's a new one we've got – social mobility – as well which I’m really keen to get involved in. I think coming from the East the social Mobility aspect of it, the Civil Service job spread outside of London I think, it's a really really interesting network and shows the sort of the focus on that leveling up piece as we go forward.
  • 01:31 [Samuel] I've always been quite taken aback by the support that I've received. I've had time off work due to my mental health and I've only ever had support, patience and understanding, and I'll always be grateful for that.
  • 01:41 [Radhika] I think working for the civil service has been my calling and I don't think I'm ever going to go back to anything else. I absolutely adore it.

East of England talent – Career opportunities closer to home

Nationally, the Civil Service influences everything from employment to social care, education to energy, and industry to inclusion.

In the East of England particularly, our work touches subjects as diverse as the rural economy and energy security, regeneration, borders and defence.

The Civil Service career offer

When you begin your career in the Civil Service you will join an inclusive team, with exciting opportunities to help shape what happens within society.

In recent years, civil servants have worked on areas that have had a big impact on citizens, including the COVID-19 response, EU exit and international trade, cyber security, and the economy, to name a few.

The UK Civil Service offers many different avenues for potential applicants to join our organisation, including the Civil Service Fast Stream and Civil Service Apprenticeships.

Have a look, and see if any of them are right for you.

“The Civil Service is simply amazing. There are so many different types of roles on offer, you work alongside supportive colleagues, and most importantly, you go to work each day knowing you’re making a difference to your community and how the country operates.”
