  • 00:06 [Nahida Ahmed, Senior equality diversity and inclusion consultant, HM Revenue and Customs] I didn't even think I was joining the Civil Service when I joined the Civil Service.
  • 00:11 [Stephen Heggs, Driving test manager, Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency] Very few people are aware of how many different departments there are but as far as I'm aware there are pretty much a Civil Service department in all aspects of general life. You know we all know about the likes of HM Revenue and Customs and Department for Work and Pensions and the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency and Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency but the Environment Agency [is another] so it's, it's a large family.
  • 00:32 [Nahida] When I joined that's where I was really invigorated and encouraged and valued and I was taught that actually I had more to give.
  • 00:40 [Louise Lenton, Regional Director in Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service] You can be anything you want to be – there isn't a career you can't go for virtually. I've had the opportunity to move from behind the scenes working in administration not seeing a customer face-to-face to standing on a stage delivering a conference speech.
  • 00:55 [Nahida] There's so much encouragement to progress and develop yourselves within the Civil Service. Having never done a masters or any kind of academic research I went and did my masters in the Civil Service whilst working full-time in nine months.
  • 01:09 [Louise] The people that I work with amaze me every day. They are so skilled at what they do – the knowledge they've got is phenomenal.
  • 01:17 [Nahida] We're all human and we all have common ground. My role is to bring people together really and understand those common goals and that common ground, and live in harmony together almost. It sounds quite of a cliche but that's so important especially in the workplace.
  • 01:30 [Daniel Warner, Service centre operations lead, Department for Work and Pensions] One thing that I suppose is really close to me is is having a mentor but not in the fashion that people think [like] that person's going to help me get to the next part of my career. I've found lifelong friends who are my mentors. They are just the most wonderful people because they want to see you do well and then they're doing well on their own but they want to see you do well in the same way.
  • 01:51 [Stephen] Work-life balance is great, benefits are good, pensions pretty much second to none, holidays again pretty much second to none. Yeah go for it!
  • 02:01 [Daniel] I worked in Hospitality, you know, I've been to University and I've never found such a supportive environment in my entire career so I wouldn't want to change it. I do not want to go and do anything else. Private sector and school will come along I'm sure at some point, ask me to do certain bits, and they'll never be able to sway me I’m afraid.

The UK Civil Service offers many different avenues for potential applicants to join our organisation, including the Civil Service Fast Stream and Civil Service Apprenticeships.
