Analytical Careers in MHCLG

At the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) you’ll be driving real changes across the country. You’ll influence decisions that make neighbourhoods better places to live and work in.

As an analyst, you’ll tackle complex problems that directly impact society. Your analysis will shape policies and programmes that affect communities across the UK.

Our multi-disciplinary analytical community consists of economists, operational researchers, social researchers and statisticians. We’re responsible for statistics, data, research, economic analysis and modelling, and analytical thought leadership across MHCLG.

Demand for a wide range of evidence to support policy-making is always high, despite changing commitments. Our analysis underpins this policy making.

As an analyst, you’ll work with a range of stakeholders within and beyond the department. By developing strong networks and collaborating with other analysts and policymakers you’ll tackle real-world challenges.

Our analysts work in an innovative and supportive community. Continuous learning and improvement is encouraged and valued.

Our analytical work falls under 3 main categories

Evidence-Based Decision Making

We gather data, conduct research, and analyse evidence to inform policymakers and Ministers. This helps them make decisions on policies policies are grounded in evidence, and to prepare accurate briefings. We also work to ensure our statistics are of high quality and are used appropriately.

Policy Evaluation and Learning

We collect and share evidence that evaluates the effectiveness of our policies. We also design and implement evaluations, assessing the impact, value for money, and effectiveness of programmes.

Technology and Analytical Methods

We leverage technology and advanced methods to evaluate policies at scale and to improve services. Access to administrative datasets allows us to establish what works to improve people’s lives. Our aim is to harness data and cutting-edge technologies to drive positive change.

Our economists provide economic advice, analysis and modelling to help development key policies across MHCLG. They work on a variety of projects, including conducting value-for-money assessments for business cases, undertaking economic modelling that feeds in to forecasts for the Office for Budget Responsibility, and providing internal analysis and forecasts on key markets of interest and the wider macro-economy.

Government Operational Researchers play a critical role in the provision of evidence for policy making and monitoring. They find solutions to management problems by applying an array of analytical and modelling techniques.

Strong analytical and technical skills are essential. Operational researchers also need interpersonal and communication skills to share findings.

MHCLG collects data that feeds into over 100 statistics publications per year. The data builds the evidence-base for areas including the housing market, building safety, homelessness, planning applications, land-use change, and local government finance.

our statisticians work on different aspects of statistics releases, including engaging with stakeholders to collect data, data analysis using cutting-edge inferential statistics techniques and Artificial Intelligence, and producing visualisations and dashboards to brief ministers.

Social researchers provide research input for the analysis required to develop, implement, review, and evaluate new and existing Government policies. This research evidence helps inform the policy decisions of ministers.

Social researchers liaise closely with policy civil servants and other government analysts, such as operational researchers, economists and statisticians. It is a challenging, fast-moving and diverse role that has a direct impact on many government activities, often at a high-profile level.
