Culture at Defra

Our Behaviours

In Defra, whilst we always work in line with the Civil Service values, we have 4 behaviours that guide our work, our approach and our interaction with others.

The behaviours point to what we value in Defra. They help us to reach and maintain high standards, giving us the framework to guide the work we do, and how we do it.

Ambitious: achieving our goals, innovating and taking risks to get there

Professional: consistently reaching high standards and doing our jobs to the very best of our ability

Outward-looking: having the confidence, humility and curiosity to look across and outside our organisations

Inclusive: actively ensuring a place where everyone can thrive and be a part of a community

Equality, Diversity & Inclusion

The Defra group equality objectives for 2024 to 2026 have been developed with input from EDI networks, champions, HR, Trade Unions and others across Defra group organisations.

The Defra group equality objectives are to:

• attract, empower and retain diverse talent

• invest in our people to unlock the potential of diverse teams

• foster a respectful and inclusive culture, where everyone can thrive

• improve our understanding and the way we work with the communities we serve

We review our objectives and priorities regularly to make sure they are relevant and meet changing business and customer needs.

Our staff diversity networks are open to everyone in Defra and are a great way to learn more about others and celebrate our diversity.

The networks provide a forum to discuss ideas and concerns, and to help put diversity and inclusion at the centre of policy making, strategic planning, and service delivery, by consulting with people across all diversity groups.

Our staff diversity networks include:

  • Age
  • Carers
  • Disability
  • Faith and belief
  • Gender
  • LGBT+
  • Race
  • Respect at work
  • Social mobility
